The Little Things...

Overview

The competition is based on the implementation of sustainability both on and off  campus. Students are to assess many different areas and departments of the university, raising the awareness of the personnel involved, and create deliverable solutions.

A panel of experts from industry and government will judge each entry.

Communication – The sustainability ideas need to be communicated beyond the university itself. Record all proceedings (take advantage the internet, particularly vodcast opportunities) and use news media to get the message out there.

Community involvement – Involve residents, community groups, clubs, associations and businesses. Engaging with a wider network has the potential to multiply gains by implementing low fruit solutions.

Flexibility & Creativity – Solutions to problems exist now, it is the attitudes that need to be changed. A creative approach will be needed to motivate the masses.

Record Keeping – Accurate records of the changes that have occurred within the project need to be kept and assessed. These include before and after photographs, statistics and other relevant material. Encourage a range of students to become involved, including those in media, mathematics, accounting (triple bottom line), statistics and engineering. (Note – the Engineering Association already has a charter for sustainability.)

Presentation – The project will be presented to the panel of judges. Again, this allows the involvement of a range of students and local groups. This could be done via a power point presentation, a DVD, or by some other creative and innovative presentation.
